Between months 15 and 16, Mommy and Daddy were the ones to hit a huge milestone - our first trip without our little one! I must say, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It was really tough to drop him off at daycare that morning, especially when he started screaming when his teacher took him from my arms, but once we made it to New Orleans, I was a happy lady. I felt like myself again for the first time in a while. Not that I am not myself when I'm at home, but I am first and foremost Ronan's mom in everyday life - my needs always come last. So, it was nice to have leisurely meals with my husband, drink delicious adult beverages, and walk in relaxation (not listening to tears or whines) for just a couple days. And once those days were up, we were more than ready and anxious to return home to our little guy. I think I'm okay with taking a quick getaway like that every once in a while....well, until the next little one hopefully comes along someday. Then we might be waiting a while again. :)
Ronan has been following the "Wonder Weeks" to a T, and he just hit his last, first major phase last week, right on time. All the sudden it's like a light went off....he understands SO much now, and has also started talking up a storm - his list of words currently includes:
dog
truck
car
dada
outside (pronounced 'ohsheee')
hi
bye
uh oh
squirrel ('turl')
kitty
bath
Much to my disappointment, he has completely stopped saying Mama all together. *sigh* Unfortunately, I think kiddos just have a harder time saying their 'm's...one friend said her son called her 'Dada' until he was almost 2! So, I'm not expecting it soon, but oh how I can't wait for him to deliberately look at me and say Mama. He does it to his Daddy, so it's hard for me to wait for it. :(
As for what he is able to understand, I think we may have a genius on our hands (don't all moms think this about their kids??). He can point to all his major body parts when asked, if you ask him where his milk or water is, he will bring you back the correct cup. He knows what shoes are and will bring them to you if asked. And something that impressed me the most the other day was when he brought me his big book of animals; this giant book with a picture of every animal you can think of. I went to the page with domestic animals and instead of telling him what they were, I asked him to point them out. He was able to (correctly) identify the following with no help from me: dog (obviously), cat, guinea pig, fish, rabbit, and the parrot. I think my jaw was touching the floor. It was awesome!
He spends a lot of time 'daydreaming' and he will just sit staring into space, or quietly 'reading' his books. He will also dance, stomp, laugh, scream, cry for no reason, cry for a reason, whine, throw his cups, food, and pacis on the floor. And he is in love with his Step2 red car that he could be pushed in around the neighborhood for hours on end. I love getting to know him more and more everyday.
Last but not least, my little boy might just be the sweetest human being on earth. He is so sweet, cuddly and just the loveliest person I've ever met. Normally the hubby picks up our boy from daycare every day, but I get the chance every once in a while. Yesterday I arrived at his school, walked up to his room and peeked in through the little square window to see my baby sitting at a toddler sized table in his little toddler sized chair, about to enjoy his strawberries for a snack. He must have seen the movement out of his peripheral because he looked up and saw me and immediately began trying to push his chair back so he could get up, desperately stumbling out of his chair he came running towards me with open arms, laughing and giving me a big bear hug. This Mommy's heart = giant puddle of mush on the toddler room floor.
Special note to my SIL, Tamara: Good luck today! Ronan can't wait to meet his new cousin!
